Woe to the world because of offenses. For offenses will inevitably come, but woe to that person by whom the offense comes. Matthew 18:7
Last week, we began to unpack the response that Jesus gave to the question: "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" (Matthew 18:1) Jesus' response reminds us that we need to remain in a dependent state on the grace and mercy of God and that we are not to elevate ourselves beyond others. This week, Jesus provides a warning for those who would do the opposite of his command. He recognizes that it is possible for the world and for other Christians to make life and discipleship difficult for his followers. We are warned to avoid being this stumbling block for others.
